Calculate enchantment costs, combine books efficiently, and optimize your XP spending in Minecraft.

Item & Enchantment Details

Each anvil use increases XP cost

Understanding Enchantment Costs

Minecraft's anvil system uses a complex formula to calculate XP costs. Each time you use an item in an anvil, it gains a "prior work" penalty that doubles the cost for the next operation.

Cost Formula

Base Cost + Prior Work Penalty + Enchantment Multiplier = Total Cost

Max Enchantment Levels

  • Sharpness, Protection, Efficiency: V (5)
  • Unbreaking, Fortune, Looting: III (3)
  • Mending, Silk Touch: I (1)
  • Fire Aspect, Thorns: II (2)

Tips to Save XP

  • Combine enchanted books before applying to items
  • Apply expensive enchantments last
  • Use an enchantment table for base enchantments
  • Avoid repairing items too many times (max 6 uses)
  • Use Mending to avoid anvil repairs

Best Enchantment Order (Example for Sword)

  1. Combine Sharpness V + Looting III books
  2. Combine Unbreaking III + Mending books
  3. Combine Fire Aspect II + Knockback II books
  4. Apply first combined book to sword
  5. Apply second combined book to sword
  6. Apply third combined book to sword

Total Cost: ~35 levels (vs 45+ if done inefficiently)

Minecraft Enchantment System

Enchanting uses lapis lazuli and experience levels to add powerful effects to tools, weapons, and armor. Enchantment level (shown on table) costs 1-3 XP levels but consumes experience equivalent to that level (level 30 enchantment costs 3 levels + 3 lapis but requires 30+ total XP levels in bar).

Optimal setup: Surround enchanting table with 15 bookshelves (2-block range, 1-block gap) for level 30 enchantments. This maximizes enchantment power, unlocking best effects like Sharpness V, Efficiency V, Protection IV. Never settle for level 1-2 enchantments—save XP for level 30s.

This calculator estimates XP and lapis costs for creating perfect gear sets. Plan enchanting sessions: gather 64 lapis (mine at Y=0 to Y=16), stockpile 30+ levels (AFK fish farm overnight = 50 levels), then enchant all tools in single session to avoid wasting resources on partial sets.

Best Enchantments Priority

Diamond Pickaxe (Priority #1): Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Fortune III (or Silk Touch). Mine diamonds, emeralds, coal, redstone 3x faster with Fortune III. Keep separate Silk Touch pickaxe for collecting ores intact or grabbing glass/ice blocks.

Diamond Sword: Sharpness V + Looting III + Unbreaking III + Mending. Looting III triples rare mob drops (wither skulls, slime balls). Mending repairs tool using XP orbs, making gear effectively infinite durability with regular use.

Diamond Armor Set: Protection IV on all pieces + Unbreaking III + Mending. Reduces damage by 64% (stacks additively). Add Feather Falling IV on boots (negates most fall damage), Respiration III + Aqua Affinity on helmet for underwater building.

Bow: Power V + Infinity + Unbreaking III. Power V increases arrow damage 150% (one-shot most mobs). Infinity means never crafting arrows again—single arrow lasts forever. Skip Flame enchantment (ruins mob drops by burning them).

Advanced Enchanting Strategy

Combine enchanted books via anvil for perfect gear. Find librarian villagers, trade for specific enchantment books (costs 10-64 emeralds per book). Anvil combining costs XP: first combine = 1 level, second = 3 levels, third = 7 levels, capping at 39 levels ("Too Expensive" message).

Avoid "too expensive" trap: Combine books first (book + book), then apply combined book to fresh tool. Order matters—apply expensive enchants like Mending last. Never repair items in anvil more than 5 times or enchantment cost exceeds 39 levels, bricking the item permanently.

FAQ

Should I enchant diamond or wait for netherite?

Enchant diamond immediately. Enchantments transfer when upgrading diamond → netherite via smithing table. Waiting wastes time mining without Fortune III pickaxe. Full enchanted diamond gear lets you efficiently farm Ancient Debris for netherite upgrades.

How do I get Mending books?

Raid villager trading or fish overnight with Luck of Sea III rod. Librarian villagers offer Mending for 10-40 emeralds (RNG-based). If first librarian doesn't have Mending, break lectern and replace until Mending appears. Alternatively, AFK fish farm yields Mending book every 4-8 hours.
